1992 Penny Die Crack Found

Adding another die crack to the list, I went through three rolls of pennies tonight, and found two upgrades for my album. I also somehow came away with 151 coins in three rolls (trust me, I counted, counted again, then recounted), so I’ll take that bonus penny as a sign of good luck.

2003-D Penny Upgrade

The first is a 2003-D, which, highlighting a penny in the 2000s always feels a little absurd, but Denver coins (let alone decent looking Denver coins) are a rarity on the Philadelphia dominant East Coast. Looking back at my January CRH stats, only 11.5% of my pennies from rolls are Denver coins, so I’ll take what I can get!

I did a fun little comparison on these two, to show the old penny vs the new one:

With the comparison, you’ll notice the details in the LIBERTY are much clearer, there are less worn and better lines in the ear, hair, and beard, and the new coin looks generally much cleaner (remember – don’t intentionally clean your coins).

It’s not perfect, but it’s a solid upgrade!

1992 Die Crack Penny

The next one in the album was a 1992 die crack, making this my third die crack in nine rolls. Much like the last two, this one appears on the Reverse, and it is strong.

This one goes in the collection with the 1985 and the 1994 that I found recently. As mentioned previously, a die crack error occurs during the minting process when a crack develops on the die used to strike the coins, leading to a visible raised line or deformation on the coin.

For my first coin roll hunt of February, I’d call this one a success!
