January 2024 Coin Roll Hunt Numbers

I searched through 1050 pennies in the month of January (21 rolls), and here were the results!

Year Distribution

  • 0 coins from 1909
  • 0 coins from the 1910s
  • 1 coin from the 1920s
  • 0 coins from the 1930s
  • 4 coins from the 1940s
  • 2 coins from the 1950s
  • 28 coins from the 1960s
  • 80 coins from the 1970s
  • 163 coins from the 1980s
  • 155 coins from the 1990s
  • 133 coins from the 2000s
  • 266 coins from the 2010s
  • 217 coins from the 2020s

Mint Location

  • 927 coins minted in Philadelphia
  • 121 coins minted in Denver
  • 1 coin minted in San Francisco

Keep or Recycle

After the hunt, the distribution of coins is as follows:

  • Added 43 coins to my coin album
  • Recycled 1003 coins
  • Stored 4 coins in coin storage tubes

In analyzing the data from the January results, a significant number of coins were from the 1970s through the 2020s, with a particularly high volume from the 2010s and 2020s. The pre-1970s coins are relatively scarce, with only a few from the 1920s, 1940s, and 1950s. Furthermore, in living on the East Coast, the overwhelming majority of the coins were minted in Philadelphia, with a smaller proportion coming from Denver and just one from San Francisco.

Overall though, it was a pretty solid month! I also created some charts, to look at this data visually.

January 2024 Penny Hunt -P, D, or S pie chart
January 2024 Penny Hunt - Book, Recycle or Hold pie chart

With a nearly full book (the 40s on are basically done, aside from San Francisco pennies), I’ll take having a 4% book rate for January as a success!

I’m a little late in getting started in February, and with it being such a short month, I doubt I’ll hit the 1,000+ mark this month, but I do wonder if the distribution on each will remain about the same.

Time will tell! Good luck out there!
