New Coin Highlights: Off-Center 1986 Penny & Reverse Proof Dollars

Just a quick post showing off some new coins I got from this week.

The first is a really cool off-center penny from 1986! My old microscope camera thing broke in our move, so I’m working with a new one, and I’m still terrible at taking photos with it, but you get the idea:

Off center 1986 penny obverse
Off center 1986 penny reverse

This error happens when the planchet (the metal disk that makes up the coin) is not positioned properly between the dies (the two pieces that strike the coin). This causes a portion of the planchet to be visible, while the design we’re used to seeing is off-center. It’s one of the most obviously visible errors, so these are highly collectable. I love that you can see the date on this one.

The US Mint had a sale, so I also grabbed some reverse proof dollar coins – specifically grabbing the New Hampshire coin, since it’s gaming related. Again, the photography is a work in progress.

Reverse proof dollar coins from North Carolina, Virginia, New York, and New Hampshire.

Overall, a good week for some cool coins!
